Assignment 7 - Due on Monday, 2 Decemeber
|
Several students have asked for an “extra credit” assignment to improve grades or replace a missed homework. So I am shortening Homework 7 and moving the due date up slightly. This homework covers everything through (but not past) wh- clauses. 1. For each of the following sentences, indicate the function of each subordinate clause:, subject, extraposed subject, noun post-modifier, complement of noun, complement of adjective, adjunct adverbials, complement/object of preposition, direct object clause, subject predicative clause, result clause in an adjective phrase, result clause in an adverbial phrase, adjunct adverbial. You can write the function on the phrase marker for each sentence, if that is easier for you. Then draw phrase markers for each sentence. On the phrase marker, indicate the subcategorization of each main verb: intensive, intransitive, prepositional, monotransitive, ditransitive, complex transitive. a. Before Nelson became so organized that his friends were bored to the screaming point, Persphone had planned an excursion to the concert that he had mentioned when they had last seen each other. b. The nearest approach to a degree of security that Persephone was allowing herself now was her conviction that the relationship between Horace and Julia Child was purely platonic. c. We all wondered why Nelson was reading another book on time management and whether Persephone could possibly endure further recitations of the ways in which he was improving his efficiency. d. Horatia stared in shock at the other woman’s feet and wondered if the fact that she was wearing white shoes after Labor Day indicated a character flaw that she had hitherto missed. e. Therefore, his career abroad had been unbroken, and, because his stipend had never been great, he had decided how the education of his children could be arranged at the smallest cost that could be managed. f. What could have launched the child’s tantrum, which was fast becoming the kind of emotional scene that Horatia most loathed when she was indulging her guilty fondness for carrot and beet smoothies? g. Had Horatia put off her errands in the frail hope that her charm and winning ways, limited though they might be, would make up for her chronic procrastination and dismal lack of organization? h. Their disagreement about how the appropriate balance between parsnips and other vegetables might be attained seemed eternal and we hope that, when they come to an agreement, the rest of us will be informed by telegram. i. Horatia shook off any trace of doubt about how she had completed her initial report and, because time was growing short and the complexity of the issues was increasing with every day that passed, bent her mind to a new appraisal of the situation. j. The recipes that Horace had the greatest affection for were those that appeared in cookbooks that were long on text and short on pictures, since he regards himself as a person who primarily learns verbally
Student sentences: Describe or name the problem in each. 1. Her birthday is on Christmas, which is a
difficulty.
